My Boss's Boss: A Steamy Older Man Younger Woman Romance Page 7

“I mean that I bought this land. The farmhouse and the land.”

“What? Really? When? Why?” Questions spilled out of my mouth, one on top of the next.

“Really,” he said, smiling up at me. “And as for why, well, that’s easy. It’s because my girlfriend lives here.” He sat up, lifting me onto my knees. “And because it’s time I put down some roots.”

“You’re going to move here? Full-time?” Hope blossomed in my chest.

“Not exactly,” he said. “I’ll still get sent out to help newly acquired stores during the transition period. But in between those times, this will be my home base. I can do most of my work from home or from the Fayetteville store. And I’ll live in that farmhouse… with you, I’m hoping. Will you move in with me?”

Happiness bubbled up inside of me and didn’t even have to think about it. “Yes!”

“Good. We’ll get it all fixed up, however you’d like.”

“Me? What about how you’d like it?”

“Well, you’re going to be spending more time there. Lots more time. Because I haven’t explained Part Two of my plan to you.”

  “What’s Part Two?”

“Part Two is where you quit working.”

  “What?” He couldn’t be serious.

“No woman of mine is going to work full-time…” I stared at him in shock before I realized that he’d stopped because he was fighting off a grin.

“You jerk,” I said, pinching his arm. He retaliated by pinching somewhere a lot more sensitive on me. That led to a fun couple minutes of wrestling on the picnic blanket before I suppressed my libido to ask more about his plans. “So you don’t really want me to quit, do you?”

“Actually, I do. For a half year, so that you can take full-time classes and finish your MBA.”

Really? It would be nice to be able to focus just on school work instead of trying to squeeze it in while working. And I could still help Mr. Miler out if he needed me. “That might be a good idea. And then I could work at Miller’s again after I’m done.”

“Or you could come work with me.”

  “At HH&H?”

“Yes. As part of the transition team. I’ve told my bosses about you. About how I think we’d be good partners. Me dealing with the business side of buying out a new store and you dealing more with the human side of things. The personal side. I told them how attentive you were to what the employees, customers, and townspeople needed.”

  “But what about Mr. Miller?”

“He’s going to need to hire another manager whether you stay or go. He’s cutting his hours back, and the store is strong enough now to support another full-time salary. So you wouldn’t be leaving him in a lurch. And between assignments, we’d be back here and you could work at the store. It’s all part of the same company now, don’t forget.”

Wow. So many new possibilities. But all of them meant that Aiden and I could be together. And that’s what really mattered. “So you’re really offering me a job?”

  “I am.”

“No one’s ever offered me a job while I was naked before.”

He chuckled. “Speaking as your boyfriend and possibly your future boss, I’m very glad to hear that.”

“Wow. You’d be my boss again.” That thought was going to take some getting used to.

“Is that a problem? You knew that employees could care about their bosses long before I finally caught on.”

That was certainly true. The Millers felt like grandparents more than ever since Mr. Miller’s heart attack. I was over at their house at least once a week, visiting, checking up on them. Doing grand-daughterly things.

“We’ll work it out—if you want to, I mean,” Aiden said, and suddenly he looked younger. And nervous. “Do you want to live here with me? Travel with me? Work with me?”

  “More than anything,” I said.

“Then we can make it work. If we can make long distance work, then we can make this work. As long as we love each other.”

“Well, that parts already been taken cared of. Because I love you.”

“I love you, too,” he said. “So I guess we can make this work, then.”

And we did. There were some bumps along the way, but we moved into that farmhouse and made it into our home. And once I got my MBA, I traveled around the country with him, helping with the transition period when new stores were acquired. But we always returned here, to Fayetteville. To our home.

A home that was filled with love and laughter, and eventually, two little girls and a boy. Plus two horses and an assortment of cats and dogs.

I couldn’t imagine my life turning out any other way, and I wouldn’t have wanted it to.

I had everything I ever wanted.
