  About the Author

  Beverly

  “Girl what’s wrong?”

“I’ve just been going through it, is all.” I shrugged haphazardly, trying not to think about my recent breakup.

“You know, a glass of wine can fix everything.” Raquel slid a glass of wine in my direction. “I’ll go make another one in the kitchen. Trust me, you’ll love it.”

Dilayla, Raquel’s friend, appeared around the corner. “Uh, no. You’re going to drink the lavender lemonade and pretend it’s wine.”

She turned to me, “Hey Beverly. How are you?”

I met Raquel while I was on a date with Alex. She was dolled up and pretty, too pretty to get stood up on a date. But there she was, and it was clear she was going to do a walk of shame out the door on a Friday night. Luckily, her date showed up, and he more than made up for the mess he put her through. They had gotten married soon after, and from the argument she and Dilayla were having, there’s a chance she was pregnant. Today, I was there to do Raquel’s makeup for a photos with her new hubby.

“I haven’t even taken a test yet,” Raquel argued.

“Doesn’t matter,” Dilayla said. “You’re two days late, and you’re never late.”

“Boo…” Raquel huffed, sipping her lemonade. “We’ve only been married a couple of months. It’s too soon for a pregnancy.”

“It’s never too soon when he’s the one.” Dilayla smirked. “Besides we might end up pregnant together. You never know.”

“Have you ever given someone chance after chance, only to see they’re not worth all the opportunities you grant them?”

Raquel and Dilayla looked at me. “All the time,” they said in unison. “Well, not anymore,” Dilayla said.

I sighed, and when they gave me a curious look, I took a deep swig of my drink.

“What’s wrong?” Raquel pressed, concern on her face.

  “Alex.”

I spilled the beans. I told them how we dated for six months, and that there were red flags the whole time. That he would turn his phone off for hours at a time and he’d have secret Instagram and SnapChat accounts.

“I should have had enough when he started to flake on his commitments to me. But for some reason I believed in him, I believed in his bullshit, and I kept giving him chance after chance,” I said.

“Men,” Dilayla said, shaking her head.

“Yeah, well imagine my surprise when he tells me he’s going out of town, but shows up at my client’s house because he’s taking my client for a date. Yeah, he was going out of town. He just forgot to tell me he was going out of town with another woman.”

“Oh gosh,” Raquel gasped, eyes wide in horror. “When was this?”

“Yesterday.” But the pain was still fresh.

I wanted to tell them I spared the drama, and just let him go without a scene, but that didn’t happen. My eyes burned into him while he pretended not to know who I am. For the sake of the girl, it was in my best interest not to ruin the $150 makeup job I’d given her, but I also didn’t give a damn.

“Hey girl, this is my boyfriend, A—“ the girl, Summer, said before I cut her off.

“Alex, you said you were going out of town. You didn’t mention bringing your new girlfriend?”

“New?” Summer questioned. “We’ve been dating about three or four months now.” She made a contemplative face. “I mean, that is new-ish but…”

“Well, Alex and I have been dating for about six months. He claimed that business trips and family stuff forced him to disappear, but if your timeline is correct - and I have no doubt it is - that means you were the real reason he’s been disappearing and unavailable.”

“Oh… my gosh. Bitch you went in on the poor girl.” Dilayla’s eyes bugged with disbelief. “How did it all go?”

I told them the truth. The girl’s face reddened with embarrassment as she looked at Alex. He blustered and stammered, but he was caught red-handed. There wasn’t anything he could do to save face.

“I felt bad for her, because she was innocent. And by that time I was done. I told her, ‘You know what? I’ll save face here. And I’ll make it easy. Summer, you paid a nice amount of money for this makeup I did. And I’m sure wherever Alex is taking you is nice. You can save the tears and let him wine and dine you this weekend, or you can take off for the hills and find some place to show off that beautiful Miami beat I’ve done on that glossy skin of yours.’ And then I grabbed my things and left.”

“I’m sorry that happened to you,” Raquel said quietly.

“I’m not,” I spat. “I don’t need that kind of energy in my life. I don’t need a man who can’t get his act together taking up space when I could have a man who’s ready for something real.”

Dilayla shot Raquel a conspicuous look, and Raquel’s eyes darted down and away after glaring back at them.

“This wine is pretty good,” I declared, pulling the glass away from me to look at it.

“Thanks girl, it’s this brand I put Raquel onto,” Dilayla declared. “Rinaldo Moscato d'Asti.”

“I’m going to have to make a note of it. After I finish Raquel’s beat. She needs to look amazing for these photos.”

The girls and I sat and talked about a lot of things. Apparently Dilayla and Raquel were both best friends who were newly married to a pair of best friends. Their other best friend, Morelli, had taken interest in the remaining friend, Dom, but he had been scared to pursue her until recently.

“You guys are all super linked up and like family now, for real,” I squealed. Even though my heart was heavy, I loved seeing happy endings and knew love still existed. Even if it didn’t exist for me.

A knock came at the door. “That’s him,” Dilayla said, getting up.

She walked to the front door, checked the peephole and let the man in. When I first looked at him, my heart skipped a beat. He was fine.

He was about 5’10,” not too tall, but not too short either. He had a deep bronze complexion with really slanted cat eyes and full lips. He reminded me of the singer Miguel, and he had the smile of a man who was used to getting his way.

Ya’ll. This man oozed confidence from every angle, and he was so tanned and bronze, it was like he shimmered. I couldn’t help staring, but my gaze dropped when he locked his on mine.

“Good afternoon, ladies.” He hugged Dilayla and then gave her a kiss on the forehead. Then he walked over to Raquel and and kissed her cheek, making a comment about not wanting to mess
up her makeup.

His cologne was aquatic yet musky. The vapors pierced my dress and snaked up my panties, tickling my clit to life. Oh god, whatever it was he wore, damn did he wear it. His fragrance, mixed with his pH and body heat, did a number to me, and I fought to keep my eyes from rolling as I sighed in bliss.

He smelled like he could fuck me out of my depression. And the last thing I needed was—

He towered over me in a delicious way, making me swoon. I prayed to God my cat eye was giving me the sultry bedroom look I wanted from that angle.

“Hello, I don’t believe we’ve met.” He extended his beautiful hand as he stood to look at me. “I’m Romeo.”

Oh god. He calls himself Romeo?

  “I’m… Beverly.”

He took my hand and a flash of desire filled my body. It intensified when he forewent a typical handshake and brushed his lips across the top of my hand. His lips were soft, super soft, and my skin awakened under him. The flutter of desire it aroused spread from my hand to my nipples and the rest of my body in a matter of seconds, and I couldn’t resist biting my lip.

That kiss alone was enough to assure me a night with him would melt away the pain from my ex’s sins.

“Pleasure to meet you, Beverly.” He said my name as if it were an exotic flower, and I couldn’t help but giggle.

“I see why they call you Romeo,” I said, blushing with a small giggle, no longer caring about how obvious I was.

“Girl, no. They call him Romeo because my momma named him Romeo.” Dilayla cut in. She rolled her eyes at him as she said. “Please don’t gas his head up.”

“My beautiful sister, ever the hater.” Romeo sneered playfully. He shared his gorgeous smile with me and winked. “Don’t pay her any mind.”

“I’m not,” I said, snickering. I picked up a makeup brush, and applied some powder to it. It was the best way I could focus on what I needed to do, and to quell the yearning I felt in my body, the one that needed to feel this exciting man’s caress. “I’m paying attention to my lovely client here, who is getting photos done with her handsome husband in a matter of hours.”

“Indeed,” Romeo said. Looking over Raquel, he commented, “A beautiful job done by an even more beautiful woman.”

“Romeo, let Beverly concentrate,” Dilayla huffed in frustration. She excused herself for a moment, and came back with her duffel bag in hand. “Girls, it’s been lovely, but it’s time to go. See you later this evening, Rocky?”

“Sure thing!” Raquel raised her hand to wave her off. “See you later Romeo.”

“Oh most definitely,” Romeo said. “Will I see you too, Beverly?”

“See me where?” I asked, clueless and nervous from being put on the spot.

“You ladies didn’t tell her?” Romeo asked, shocked. He turned to me. “I’m throwing a little get together tonight. You’re more than welcome to come.”

“Oh, I, uh, thanks!” My heart skipped a beat. I wasn’t interested in going out. Hell, I’d barely gotten up in time to shower and brush my teeth for this appointment. My plans were to actually curl up in bed and die a new death because I was heartbroken.

“Romeo, I’m sure Beverly has plans of her own. You can’t ask a busy woman out last minute.” Dilayla cut in, looking at me with a smile as if she were helping save me from her brother. I could see their relation in the bronzed skin, perfectly arched brows and the devious smile they shared. Yeah, they were definitely related. “Come on, let’s go,” she said, pushing him out the door. “See you girls later.”

  Romeo

“I swear, I can’t take you anywhere.” Dilayla shook her head as I opened the door for her. Irritation laced her gorgeous face, but I ignored it. For as long as she’s known me - which is forever - my baby sister knows better than to think I’d let a pretty face pass me by.

“Calm down.” I pushed the key into the ignition and pulled out of Raquel’s driveway. “I didn’t want to be rude.”

“You were practically salivating over her,” Dilayla said.

  “Jealous much?”

“No, it’s not that. You just need to chill, Ro. You’re not in the habit of dating seriously, and Beverly just broke up with her man the other day.”

“So she’s single?” My mind mulled over thoughts of Beverly. Lust burned in my brain. I yearned to touch her, to know the secrets hiding beneath that sexy, sultry… and yes, I’ll admit, sad smile.

“Romeo, her boyfriend cheated on her.” Dilayla scoffed. “She needs time to get past that before someone like you comes in to give her a whole new headache.”

“Whoa, little sis.” I raised my hand in protest. “First of all, I’m not him, whoever it is you’re mad at. Second, I didn’t say anything about breaking any hearts.”

Dilayla shook her head. “Okay, listen. She’s a very delicate situation.” She pulled out her phone and started texting. “Her ex-boyfriend also dated Raquel.”

  “Damn sis. And they’re cool?”

“That’s the thing.” Dilayla turned to me. “Raquel hasn’t even told her.”

She proceeded to explain the situation, from how this clown chased Raquel for a date, only to stand her up and end up at the same restaurant with Beverly. Raquel was incensed - as she should have been - but she played it off. On her way out the door, Kenny, grabbed her and saved her from looking silly in front of everyone. They married less than a week later.

“And how are they friends now?” I struggled to comprehend.

“Beverly noticed Raquel looking sad and alone. And she’s a makeup artist. She wanted to have Raquel model for her IG page. Raquel was kind enough to take her up on the offer. As far as I can tell, she’s a cool girl, but… she has no idea that Raquel and Alex have history.” Her voice dropped as she uttered, “I’m kind of reserved on her until I know what’s really good. When she knows - and at some point she’ll have to know - then we’ll see whether or not she’s really worth getting to know.”

Desire pulsed in my veins. Beverly was gorgeous. Really gorgeous. She had beautiful, creamy skin, and plump lips. She had this Kylie Jenner vibe to her, but with a little more natural thickness to her. Dark, rich hair, and manicured nails. I don’t remember looking at her feet, but I’m sure they were as delicious as the rest of her.

Baby sis was skeptical, but an enticing shudder shot through my body at the thought of Beverly. I wanted her on my tongue, on my dick. I wanted to make her erupt and splash down on me, and then I wanted to turn her over and push myself deep inside every hole she had until I exploded inside her.

“Are you even listening?” Dilayla cut into my fantasies.

  “Yeah, I heard everything. That’s what’s up.”

“I asked you a question.” Her voice vibrated with irritation. “You ain’t even paying attention.”

I blushed, sheepish with embarrassment. “My bad, sis. You caught me. I just have a lot on my mind. What did you ask?”

“I asked if you and Nick had your meeting yet?”

“Oh. That.” I scratched my full black curls. “We’re planning to get together this week. You know Kenny’s involved also, and possibly, Dom.”

“It’s really a family affair these days,” she said. “It’s crazy. Just a few months ago, we were all single. Raquel and Kenny wed, and then Nick and I followed behind. Now Morelli’s with Dom. We’re all married to best friends who are like brothers.”

“Yeah, exactly, so stop fronting and let me get with Beverly. She might be your sister-in-law.” I nudged her as I smiled. She growled and punched me in the arm.

“Romeo, I don’t know the girl, and I may not fully trust her until the truth is revealed, but I am not going to set ya’ll up. That’s too much drama for me.”

“Fine,” I said. “I’ll just hit up Raquel.”

“No need to.” I didn’t look at her, but I knew she was her rolling her eyes. With a miffed sigh, she revealed, “She’s bringing Beverly to the party tonight.”

  “Clutch!” My heart shouldn’t
have sped up with excitement, but the truth was, I was really interested in seeing what this Beverly girl was about.

She was alluring, adorable. Her sad smile had me magnetized. I wanted to see if I could handle the challenge and erase that loser’s energy out of her thoughts.

“Romeo,” Dilayla interjected with a warning tone. “She’s coming, but you’d better not cause any shit.”

“Why would I cause trouble at my own event?” I asked.

“You know how your crazy ass ex is. And you know she’s going to come.”

“Penny isn’t going to be an issue,” I said, waving off the thought. “We haven’t spoken in weeks. We haven’t been an item in years.”

“And? The girl is still in love with you, so that means nothing.”

I nodded. “If anything, Penny will be escorted from the venue. I’m not ruining my opportunity with Beverly.”

“There is no opportunity, because I won’t let you get that close to her.”

  “Okay.”

I said what I needed to silence my little sister. Dilayla meant well, even if she was a hater in the process. She didn’t understand, I’m not a dog. Women were just focused on trying to get next to me at any cost, and I would rather break their hearts while they jumped through hoops than to give them something they felt entitled to.

Me and what I had to offer.

I started in the streets, selling until I was able to flip my way out of it. Despite my involvement, I still went to college, and got a degree in finance. Today, I was an investor, and owned stakes in a few local businesses. I was still connected to the streets, but I didn’t dabble in anything illegal. I just had friends who respected that I was too smart to invest my energy in criminal activity, and supported my growth.
