“I think you’ve had enough now, baby.” He stops anyway. “You’ll not be able to sit down tomorrow if I go on too long, and I thought you were never going to give in.” He pulls me up to sit on his knee, my dress gaping open, my behind hot against his legs. “Fuck!   EIGHT MONTHS LATER

  Lindsay and Kate have gone on their trip, and I miss them.

  I miss Kate, because she is my daughter, but I want her to enjoy herself, and I know she is ready to fly the nest. She’s going to move in with her guy, Julian, soon, and she won’t be living at home at all.

  Most of all I miss Lindsay, though, because I want her with me every single day. I send her messages, but I don’t bug her with calls every day. With my work and the time differences, it’s not always easy, anyway. And I want her and Kate to have a good time without me butting in too much, just like they would have done before we got together.

  I know Lindsay still listens to my show when she can, catching up with podcasts after the event if she can’t listen live. I tell her she can listen to me prattle on any time she likes, but she says no, this way she hears me when I’m not even there.

  When Kate calls home, she tells me Lindsay has been listening to me all around Europe, and I imagine my daughter rolling her eyes, but it’s great to be told how much Lindsay is thinking of me.

  She’ll be home soon, and I’m pleased about that. I can’t wait to have her back.

  On the last day of their trip, the girls are in Paris, on the terrace of a cafe by the Seine. I know because I’m there, too, but only Kate is aware of it. The producer gave me a few days off.

  Lindsay goes to the restroom, and when she comes back Kate says, “Dad’s latest podcast is up,” and she starts to play it on her phone. “I wonder what he played for you this time.”

  “Are you missing him, too? You never usually want to listen to him.”

  I hear me on Kate’s phone introduce the next track. “This one’s for Lindsay.”

  “Hey, that doesn’t sound like the usual podcast. He never mentions me by name.”

  I step forward, still behind her. “I did this time.” She stands up, and turns around, her chair clattering to the floor, and I pull her into my arms. Her heart is thumping. I think I gave her a fright. I didn’t mean to do that.

  “This is no ordinary podcast. I made it just for you.”

  She kisses me and the track starts to play. Bruno Mars “Marry You” gives the message I want her to hear.

  She looks at me. “You want to marry me?”

  “I do. But the question I came to ask is do you want to marry me?”

  “I do.”

  “We’re good then.” And she laughs and kisses me.

  Then she looks at Kate. “Sorry. Public display of affection, there.”

  “I’ll live,” Kate says. “In fact, have another one on me. Cheers.” She raises her glass of wine to us as I kiss my wife to be.
